ACH payroll settlement date calculator
Data as of 2026-10-05
Plan from the intended payday
Enter the payday you want to plan around and the number of business lead days your payroll provider requires. The tool first moves a target that falls on a weekend or Reserve Bank holiday to the previous open settlement day. It then counts backward by your selected lead days to produce a modeled submission date. The lead time is an input supplied by you, not a rule supplied by this site.
Nacha describes an industry practice of paying paydays that otherwise fall on a weekend or holiday on the prior Friday. This calculator uses a previous-open-business-day planning convention, which also handles a Friday holiday. Confirm the actual payroll policy, funding requirements, and submission cutoff with the provider. The calculator does not determine an employment-law deadline or authorize changing a payday.
Worked example: Thanksgiving planning
| Target and lead time | Modeled settlement | Planning submission |
|---|---|---|
| Thu Nov 26, 2026; 1 business day | Wed Nov 25, 2026 | Tue Nov 24, 2026 |
| Fri Nov 27, 2026; 2 business days | Fri Nov 27, 2026 | Tue Nov 24, 2026 |
How the backward count works
The formula is: adjust the target to the previous open settlement day, then subtract the chosen number of open settlement days. Weekends and the Reserve Bank closure dates from K.8 do not count. A zero-day input returns the adjusted payday itself as the planning date. Zero is a counting option, not a claim that the provider accepts same-day submission.
The calendar is the same one used by the homepage estimator. Saturday holidays do not remove the preceding Friday from Reserve Bank operations. Sunday holidays do remove the following Monday. This prevents the backward count from using the Board of Governors' office schedule as though it were the Reserve Bank settlement calendar. Read the K.8 dates and observance rules. Read Nacha's payroll industry-practice explanation.
Use the result with provider instructions
Ask the payroll provider which deadline applies to the complete file and whether funding must arrive separately. Enter the provider's business-day lead time exactly as it is defined in its instructions. This tool counts settlement business days; if the provider uses a different business calendar, compare the result with that calendar before submitting.
After finding a planning date, use the Same Day windows page if the provider says a Same Day option is available. The operator deadlines on that page are not automatically the provider's customer deadlines. The provider needs time to process and transmit the file under its own arrangements.
A modeled settlement date does not establish employee funds availability. It also does not verify authorization, account details, sufficient funding, or acceptance of the payroll file. Keep the provider's actual confirmation with your payroll records. If a holiday pushes the date earlier than expected, review the plan before the submission day.
Dates outside the published calendar years are rejected. The tool also stops when a backward count would leave the verified calendar. That behavior prevents an unverified holiday date from entering the result. Reduce the lead time only if the provider supports it, or consult a published calendar covering the missing year.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the payroll lead time come from?
You enter the lead time supplied by your provider. The calculator does not prescribe a universal payroll lead time.
What happens when the payday is closed?
The planning convention moves it to the previous open settlement day. Confirm the actual payday policy with the provider.
