Compare the services at the network level

The comparison below uses the Federal Reserve's own descriptions of FedACH Services and Fedwire Funds Service. Choose a service in the filter to focus the table. This page compares the network features described by the operator. It does not quote a retail bank price, a customer transfer limit, or a promise about when a recipient can spend the money.

FedACH Services provide batched payment services for electronic exchanges of debit and credit transactions through the ACH network. Fedwire Funds is described as an electronic funds-transfer service for same-day transactions. The Federal Reserve also describes the finality of Fedwire payments credited to participants' Federal Reserve Bank master accounts. That account-level description is more specific than a general claim that every customer wire is instantly available.

What to confirm before choosing

Start with the payment instructions supplied by the receiving institution. Ask your sending bank to confirm the service it will use, the customer submission cutoff, the fee, and the expected delivery information. Do not substitute ACH instructions for wire instructions based only on a comparison of timing. This page does not validate routing information or provide bank-specific instructions.

If the bank offers an ACH option, the homepage estimator can help you examine the settlement calendar. Select standard or Same Day ACH and enter the actual local initiation time. Read the result's assumptions before comparing it with a wire option offered by the bank. A network schedule is only part of the information needed to choose a service.

The table does not rank one service as cheaper. Bank prices have not been verified for this page, and the Federal Reserve service descriptions do not establish the fee charged to a retail customer. Likewise, the table does not treat the Same Day ACH amount limit as a universal customer wire or standard ACH limit.

Settlement and account availability

For ACH timing, the tools display a conditional scheduled settlement date using official windows and the published holiday calendar. For standard ACH, the homepage makes a next-business-day scheduling assumption. A bank-selected later effective date or an earlier customer cutoff can change the actual timing.

For Fedwire, the cited finality statement refers to payments credited to participant master accounts at the Federal Reserve Bank. The page does not turn that statement into a recipient account posting deadline. Ask the bank what its confirmation means and whether additional account processing remains.

Use the official source pages below to examine each operator description in context. Return to the holiday calendar if the payment is near a weekend or a Reserve Bank closure. For payroll, use the payroll planning tool with your provider's stated lead time rather than treating either network description as a provider submission deadline.
